The plague is back?

November 18, 2015

In medieval times sickness and disease scoured the earth, leaving dead everywhere. But one in particular is well known for its destructive and gruesome nature, the bubonic plague.

This plague is quite rare now, especially in a place like Oregon, Only eight patients having been diagnosed since 1995 and none resulting in death.

On October 24th a teenage girl was hospitalized in Bend, Oregon.

She had been on a hunting trip and is believed to have contracted the plague from an infected flea. When caught early, the disease can be successfully cured with antibiotics.

However, despite this fifteen other cases of bubonic plague have been documented this year. Four of which resulted in the death of that person.

Squirrels, chipmunks, and wild rodents as well as their fleas can all be disease carriers.
Despite technological advances no vaccine or permanent removal of the disease is in our near future. the same disease that plagued us centuries ago still plagues us today.

We now have the ability to clone human beings, but we are still unable to find additional preventative measures to take to eliminate this deadly disease that has been plaguing humankind for centuries.
There are many other pressing matters in particular that we have been absorbed with such as cancer and outbreaks of viruses like Ebola.

We have yet to truly cure most major diseases of this day and age as well as from past centuries.
