A Little Showy

October 5, 2015

This year’s VMA’s or video music awards featured numberless celebrities receiving awards and modeling designer outfits. One might notice that over the years these outfits have become more and more revealing.

The outfits this year were threadbare and provocative. They would be considered inappropriate and unacceptable if worn at any other events or by other people.

Take Miley Cyrus for example, her outfit was so revealing it would have been hardly a difference if she were to have arrived there without any clothes at all. The small amount of clothing she did wear barely covered her and didn’t leave much to the imagination.

These celebrities often serve as role models for adolescents, pre-teens, and even children. What message are these celebrities sending to these children, pre-teens, and adolescents that look up to them? Thankfully, there are a few celebrities who understand a little bit better the effects there dress can have.

Taylor Swift arrived wearing a more modest, but still fashion forward and modern outfit. Though she did show some midriff, the way she chose to dress left everyone feeling much more comfortable.
Swift showed that there is an alternative and still very acceptable way of dress, that is less revealing.

celebrities, like Cyrus send the message that those who are willing to show the most skin will be the most popular or well liked. This message is completely inappropriate for the audience that these celebrities reach.

These revealing styles also lead to more manufacturing of similar styled clothing in stores. This, along with the influence from celebrities to wear this style of clothing adds to a problem we might notice in our own school.

Every year more revealing outfits are seen in the halls. Shorter dresses, skirts, and shorts, and more revealing tops. Though this isn’t a problem for all students some things are just not appropriate for a school, despite the message being received from celebrities. Most shocking is the trend of younger adolescents and pre-teens wearing these same styles of clothing.

The message celebrities are sending through their dress is unnecessary due to other more modest and equally accepted styles of dress, the audience their message is received by doesn’t understand the impact of this dress.
