The coronavirus has taken away many of the things I was looking forward to this year like spring sports and prom. I’ve adapted to life in quarantine pretty well, but what has been tough for me to adapt to is living a more lazy life.
Like many people, I consider myself to be a pretty active person. I’m not the type of person to sit on the couch and binge-watch a whole season of a show in a day.
After about a week of staying at home, I got tired of doing nothing, and it got me thinking about what things I can do to stay active.
Currently, all gyms and school tracks are closed for the foreseeable future. So what can I do to stay active?
One thing I have been doing since the start of quarantine is fishing on a weekly basis. Fishing is a great way to be in the great outdoors while soaking in some rays. This is a great way to exercise and have fun while practicing social distancing at the same time. I have found that fishing is a great activity to do with friends, regardless if they have ever fished before.
Fishing never used to interest me until a buddy of mine took me fishing two years ago. I was reluctant at first, but once I got out there and started to catch fish I started to love it. I have been hooked (no pun intended) ever since. Even if getting dirty for a big bass doesn’t interest you, go with some friends, socialize, and catch fish!
Moreover, if you are tired of the same mundane walks around your neighborhood, get on a bike and traverse Omaha. There are various trails throughout Omaha, like the Papio trail, that can take you throughout all of West O. This is another great activity that you can do with friends while still being socially distant.
Just last week I went on a bike trail with a good friend I haven’t talked to since the start of quarantine and we had some deep talks about life and the future as the sun set.
Finally, a great activity I do at my home is an at-home workout. While some people don’t know what exercises to do or don’t have the motivation to work out, a great way to learn and get motivated is by watching and following along to at-home workouts on youtube. There are thousands of different workouts that you can find all across Youtube.
My personal favorite at-home workout is following a rigorous core workout. It gets your heart racing while at the same time strengthening your core. The best part is you can do a 10-minute core workout before a shower. After about a week, you will notice results not only in your core, but your sleep will also improve.
In tough times like these, the best thing you can do is adapt to the situation, stay active, stay positive, and most importantly stay healthy!
