Ode to Joy

Lawrence swaps her arrows for a mop

February 8, 2016

In the film, “Joy”, actress Jennifer Lawrence plays the part of a single-mother turned successful business mogul Joy Mangano.

The film highlights her rise to success based off of true events. “Joy”, gives viewers an inside view of what it takes to be a successful inventor in the modern day.

Going into the movie theater, I had no background information surrounding the story. However, I was quickly absorbed in the plot and intrigued by this rags to riches story and ended up thoroughly enjoying the film.

The film was jam packed with extremely talented actors such as: Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and even a brief cameo by Melissa Rivers playing the part of her late mother Joan Rivers.

As usual Jennifer Lawrence’s acting did not disappoint. Her role as Joy really made the viewers understand the struggle of the real life inventor, Joy Mangano.

The emotion and passion Lawrence puts into the character makes the viewer believe that the invention of a “self-wringing mop” is the hottest invention of the decade.

Along with fantastic acting, the film transported viewers to the early 90s with its realistic sets and costume designs.

The home that Joy shares with her mother, grandmother, ex-husband, and children reflects her position as a struggling single mother.

The house also serves as motivation for Joy to be so passionate about her invention and urges her to never give up.

Costume design in the film also reflects the early 90s and captures the essence of the various characters. Throughout the film, Joy dresses as “herself”.

In one scene of the film Joy has her first opportunity to show her invention on television.

The production company’s owner, played by Bradley Cooper, has her dressed as a much higher class, spokeswoman.

To this Joy responds, “It has to be just me,” she then goes back to change into a plain pair of slacks and a white shirt. This is significant to Joy as a character and the success of her product being from an average woman. This is important for her buisness because she wanted to have her products be used by women like herself.

The film’s happy ending satisfies all viewers. In the last scene we see Joy as a successful buisness owner who uses her power to help other aspiring inventors.

Overall the movie did not disappoint and I would recommend this film to anyone. It’s excellent costume design and fantastic acting made viewers feel the anguish that Joy Mangano had while working to achieve her goals.
